Visa and Tribunal Fee Increases: Why Getting It Right the First Time Matters More Than Ever

Visa and Tribunal Fee Increases: Why Getting It Right the First Time Matters More Than Ever

The cost of migrating to Australia is set to rise significantly from 1 July 2026. Standard annual indexation will apply to Visa Application Charges (VACs), with indicative estimates suggesting a 3% to 5% increase across major subclasses, including employer-sponsored, skilled independent, and partner visas.

More critically, the cost of appealing a refused visa is becoming increasingly prohibitive. The Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) has confirmed that the fee for reviewing a migration decision will increase to $3,727.

Why this development matters

The rising costs highlight a system that is becoming more structured, more controlled, and more selective. The financial risk of lodging a poorly prepared application is no longer just the loss of the initial visa fee-it now includes the substantial cost of pursuing a review.

Fee TypeFrom 1 July 2026
ART Migration Review Decision$3,727
ART Protection Decision$2,293
ART Standard Application Fee$1,195

What this means for applicants

Eligibility alone is no longer enough; applicants must also consider timing and strategy. Delaying a ready application now carries a direct financial consequence. Furthermore, relying on the tribunal to fix errors made during the initial lodgement is an expensive gamble.

Practical next steps

If your application is ready, there is a clear advantage in lodging before 30 June to avoid the fee increases. Ensure your application is decision-ready and comprehensively documented from the outset to minimise the risk of refusal.

The window is open now, but it will not stay open forever. If your visa pathway, sponsorship plan or PR strategy depends on the current settings, review it now before deadlines, evidence gaps or policy changes narrow your options.
