Home Affairs has confirmed that Work and Holiday subclass 462 ballot registrations for China, India and Vietnam opened on 4 June 2026 and close on 25 June 2026 for the 2026 to 2027 program year. The same Home Affairs update also states that Luxembourg passport holders no longer need to provide a Letter of Support when applying for a first Work and Holiday subclass 462 visa from 3 June 2026.
For applicants, the practical issue is timing. A ballot registration is not the same thing as a visa grant, and being selected from a ballot does not remove the need to satisfy the relevant visa criteria. Applicants should check the official Home Affairs instructions, prepare identity and eligibility information carefully, and avoid relying on social-media shortcuts or informal advice.
For Australian employers in tourism, hospitality, agriculture, regional services and seasonal workforces, the update is also relevant. Some employers use Working Holiday Maker and Work and Holiday visa holders as part of their broader labour plan. However, employers should not assume that every interested worker can lawfully work in the role, for the required period, or under the same conditions. Work rights and visa conditions should be checked before onboarding.
Practical checklist for applicants and employers
| Audience | Action | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Applicants from China, India and Vietnam | Check the official ballot deadline and register within the published window. | The published registration window closes on 25 June 2026. |
| Luxembourg applicants | Check the updated Letter of Support requirement. | Home Affairs says the Letter of Support is no longer required from 3 June 2026. |
| Employers | Verify visa status and work rights before shifts start. | Work rights are fact-specific and should not be assumed. |
| Both | Keep official records and screenshots of lodged steps. | Evidence supports future review and reduces confusion. |
The most important message is that official timing matters. If a worker or employer is unsure whether a subclass 462 or another pathway is appropriate, they should obtain tailored migration advice before relying on an assumption.
